An Abuja High Court at Gudu on Thursday remanded the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Atiku Abubakar Kigo and five others in Kuje Prison, following allegation that they conspired and diverted the sum of N32.8 Billion from the Police Pension Fund.
The other accused persons who were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissions (EFCC) alongside Mr Kigo were Esai Dangabar, Ahmed Inuwa Wada, John Yakubu Yusufu, Veronica Ulonma Onyegbula and Sani Habila Zira.
There was a mild drama in the court as the trial began. Two lawyers, Adeniyi Awomolo and John Egwuonu separately announced that they will be representing the accused persons.
Presiding Judge, Justice Mohammed Abubakar Talba however asked each accused person to identify their counsel, clearing the air for the case to commence.
Each of the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the 16 count read to them.
Mr Awomolo, the counsel to the first defendant, made an application for bail, which was supported by the counsel to the other five accused persons, Mr Egwuonu based on the fact that the accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty by the court of the law, therefore the accused persons can be admitted to bail.
The counsel to the EFCC, Rotimi Jacob who did not object to the applications of the defence counsels, asked the court to set another date for the bail to be formally argued.
Though the accused persons begged the court to allow them to remain in the Custody of the EFCC pending the determination of their bail applications, the judge declined their request, saying that: “there is no law permitting the remand of an accused person in any other place apart from prison custody.”
He thereafter ordered the six accused persons to be remanded in prison till next Tuesday when their bail application will be argued.
Consequently, the accused persons were moved to the Kuje prison

On Thursday, March 22, 2012, American model and socialite, Kim Kadarshian was ‘flour bombed’ by a strange woman while on the red carpet during the launch of her new scent True Reflections at the London Hotel.
After the incident, Kim had openly declared that though this was her most embarrassing moment, she would not take legal actions against her attacker.
‘That probably is the craziest, unexpected, weird thing that ever happened to me…I said to my makeup artist, I wanted more powder and that’s a whole lot of translucent powder right there’, Kim K had said earlier.
However, she soon changed her mind and has now decided to press charges. According to her, the reason for this decision is to emphasise that though people are entitled to their opinion, violence should not be an option.
‘I don’t think someone like that should get away with those types of actions’ she reportedly said.
Sources have claimed that Kim’s refusal to arrest the lady was solely because she didn’t want a reason to leave the venue of the event, which was the launch of her new scent True Reflections and not because she was nice, as she made it seem.
Meanwhile, her sister Khloe Kadarshian has since renounced her membership with the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on the ground that the woman who attacked her sister Kim, was a fellow member.
‘Not only has PETA lied to the public, but they have proved that they support this kind of behaviour. I’ve been a vocal supporter of PETA for a long time but I have also been very vocal about anti-bullying, so this was a huge disappointment for me‘, Khloe said.

Meanwhile, Hawey Weinstein presented Katy Butler a high school student a special honour for her anti- bullying efforts in the movie ‘Bully’.
Butler has been spearheading a campaign to convince censors at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to lower the R-rating of Weinstein’s upcoming documentary ‘Bully’ to PG thereby allowing youngsters to see the film in theatre.
Other winners at GLAAD Media Award include independent film ‘Pariah’ (Outstanding Film in Limited Release), HBO’s Cinema Verite (Best TV Movie or Miniseries award) and Oprah Winfrey (Best Talk Show Episode).
The 23rd Annual GLAAD media awards was held on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in New Jersey, New York City, USA.
