Nasty Nas is back!
With everyone anticipating his 10th solo studio album titled ‘Life is Good‘ after the success of his latest single ‘Daughters‘, Nasir Jones shocked the entertainment world last night when he released the album art to his forthcoming LP – with his ex-wife Kelis’ wedding dress resting on his lap.
‘Here it goes!! #NasLifeIsGoodCover‘, @Nas tweeted a video link, unveiled the controversial album art.
‘@Nas The Life Is Good cover is amazing. I’m shocked you went there. Wow.’, a fan @Toure tweeted.
‘Wen my dad was like des should I use this album cover? I was like if yu dont I WILL!!!ha‘, the Queens Bridge rapper’s daughter Destiny Jones tweeted.
This isn’t the first time Nas has wowed his fans with an album cover; be it artistic or controversial, the rapper sure knows how to stir things up. Let’s have a look at what his other nine previous albums covers have to say;
ILLMATIC (1994)
The 1994 album cover featured a picture of Nas as a child, which was taken after his father, musician Olu Dara, returned home from an overseas tour.
IT WAS WRITTEN (1996)
The ’96 album cover featured a much older Nas on the cover, it also signified a transition of the rapper’s’ music from the original street-philosophical theme to a more commercial side.
I Am… (1998)
Making the ‘I Am…’ album cover was quite tricky; Famed photographer Danny Hastings put a clay mold on his face and poked air holes so he could breathe, but he almost suffocated after clay got lodged in his nose. The cover depicts Nas making a final transition from boy (Illmatic) to man (It was Written) to a ‘King’.
NASTRADAMUS (1999)
Often described as Nas’ weakest album, the ‘rushed’ LP’s album art followed the concepts of the previous three albums – Nas’ face spread across the cover with the Queens Bridge background. Just like the title and concept of the album which was taken after the prophetic seer, Nas is depicted as the prophet with a brown hoodie over his head.
STILLMATIC (2001)
Nas brought a new sound on his fifth album so did he with the concept of the album art. The rapper who had a famed ‘beef’ with Brooklyn rapper Jay Z at that time looked all HipHop-like in his orange hooded sweatshirt and joggers with a baseball hat to match.
GOD’S SON (2002)
Definitely Nas’ most reflective album, it was only natural for the cover art to depict such calmness and mediation. Nas appeared topless on the cover and earned the nickname ‘God’s son’ forever.
STREET’S DISCIPLE (2004)
It was Nas’s first ‘Double album’; The album’s cover art is a digitally created image, using different photos of Nas to create an adaptation of ‘The Last Supper’.
HIPHOP IS DEAD (2006)
The controversial album’s cover art shows Nas throwing a black rose into a grave supposedly dug for the Hip-Hop genre, inspired by Nas’s view of the music industry and the state of hip hop music at the time.
UNTITLED (2008)
After battling with his record label on the title of the album (Nas had insisted on using the word ‘Nigger’). Nas released his ninth album ‘Untitled’ with yet another controversial album art, the ‘N’ word formed on his back with the marks of whips.
